Why this PR?

We couldn't reliably gate premium features because billing and permissions were scattered across ad-hoc role checks.

Root cause

Entitlement checks were duplicated across a dozen call sites, each reading the user's plan and roles slightly differently, so a Stripe plan change never propagated consistently to what the app actually unlocked.

What it does

Premium gating and permissions are handled in one place now, so new features just work with Stripe out of the box.

Add Stripe subscription managementNew subscription, portal, and webhook handlers with entitlements gating premium features behind the customer's plan.
Migrate user roles to RBACReplace ad-hoc role checks with a proper RBAC middleware. Existing users backfilled behind a feature flag.
Remove dead email templatesDrop three unused templates from the welcome / trial / payment-failed flow.

RBAC middleware rewrites the auth pathrbac-middleware.ts
In-flight sessions need to be backfilled into the new role table before deploy, or requests will 403.
Stripe webhook handler has no retry policywebhooks.ts
If a webhook is dropped, subscription state in the DB diverges from Stripe. Add a reconciliation job.

No. Stage sends code to model providers for analysis only at review time. Nothing is stored beyond the lifetime of a chapter generation, and nothing is used to train models.
Is Stage free for open source?
Yes. Stage is completely free for open-source repositories with no time limit. You can use chapters, summaries, and all review features on any public repo without a subscription.
How does pricing work?
Starter is free for public repositories. Team is $30/user/month for private repositories. Enterprise is custom.
